great console! July 2, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ive had my PS3 a while now and I've decided to do a review for it. Now I've owned the 360 for a few months before deciding to let my brother buy it off me so I could get a PS3 and I also own a Wii. I must say that all three consoles are superbly built and designed and have great games on offer. I love both my WII and PS3 and I have great fun on both machines. The PS3 is obviously for more serious gaming, where as the Wii is for fun (although there are several serious games for it which I do own), but I enjoy both. The PS3 I thought was and is still a bit pricey but nevertheless I am happy with what I have got. It's a big console but a nice smooth looking console that offers some great options. Graphics that it produces are absolutely beautiful (depending on the game publishers), the controls, although still practically the same looking from the PS1/PS2 era, they are still great to use and now comes wireless with motion sensors, which I like. There are USB ports on the console although a couple have been took off on the 40GB console compared to the 60Gb console and you can hook up to the internet via the console, which I have done. The games online that I have are great and you can also download games/demos and other content via the network. The consoel also plays blue ray dvd's, which I have not tried as I do not own any blue ray disc's, but I am happy with the PS3 so far, and my only negative point is what aload of people have already said, that you can't play PS2 games on it, but it is still, to me, worth a 5 out of 5!
Should I Choose an Xbox 360 or PS3? July 1, 2008 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Everyone has their own views over which console is the best. You've got your Microsoft and Sony fanboys who are completely biased who drab on and on! yawn! Im fairly lucky (and possibly stupid) for having a 360, PS3 & Wii, meaning I can give my own impartial view to those not fortunate enough to own all three.
Xbox 360 is a great machine but has major reliability issues? My machine has been returned for repair twice. The internal fans are so loud its ridiculous. When it works, the choice of games are far superior to other systems at the moment but that should be the case as it has been out the longest. The core system is cheap but when you start adding on the extras? harddrive, wireless bridge, wireless controller, battery and charger and most of all having to pay for gold memberships to play online, you have to ask yourself if it really is cheap? Ok so you could buy the Elite unit for 250 which has the majority of the essential kit with it but you still need to buy the wireless bridge (if you are wireless)at 60 and pay 40 per year for a Gold Membership to play online which takes you over the price of a PS3. You dont even get a HDMI port on the normal units (you do on the Elite unit) for HDTV link up (you can however connect with component cables)! All in all the system is good with some fantastic exclusive games Bioshock (at the moment), Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3+4 and possibly Halo 3 at a push but it is not future proof and uses old tecnology with serious reliability issues. I could not in all honesty recommend this machine over a PS3.
The PS3 is also a great machine and is reliable, future proof and comes with pretty much everything included such as built in wifi, wireless controller with built in rechargable battery and free unlimited online play. Now the sore point for those 360 fanboys, bluray. Bluray is a fairly new media that allows developers to store large amounts of data on one disk without compression. This means that films have far superior picture and sound quality. However,it hasn't been used for games development until very recently. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a fantastic showpiece for how the future of gaming should look. Not only is the game incredibly immersive, the sound is unbelievably good with full dolby surround sound supported. The game is huge also, I clocked up an impressive 32 hours to complete the game. Having said that bioshock clocked up nearly 20 hours on an ordinary dvd disc. The PS3 is the better buy in my opinion, it runs almost silently rather than the 360's whirring and droning. Reliability is not an issue, it's fairly up-to-date technology wise, It comes with pretty much everything you need including free online gaming (although xbox live is slightly better but not worth forking out the extra 40 pounds per year, Microsoft you cheeky sods haven't we all paid enough). And dont forget PS3 has some pretty fantastic exclusive games Motorstorm, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet and so much more to come. Also, Sony continue to make significant improvements to the system with Firmware patches.
The more PS3 units sold, the better the gaming experience will be for everyone as more and more Games Developers will begin to take advantage of the huge storage capacity of the bluray discs to provide longer and more detailed games following in the footsteps of Konami in the recent MGS4.
Its all good whichever system you choose (until you get those dreaded red rings of death on the 360, I cant stress enough how annoying this is!! BE WARNED)
I would just like to mention that if you really want to see a masterclass of programming genius, you really want to check out Super Mario Galaxy on the Nintendo Wii. Those Nintendo boys know how to raise the benchmark in gaming. Oh and if you want an immersive First Person Shooter, forget your Call of Duty's, forget your Halo's, even forget the supurb bioshock, check out Retro Studios Metriod Prime 3 Corruption on the Nintendo Wii also!
Warning June 22, 2008 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
The PS3 is a very good console, it has decent graphics and the games get better and better. HOWEVER, a new error seems to be popping up all over the world called '80010514' which is something my PS3 has caught. This renders your blueray player useless which means no games, dvds e.t.c. According to some websites such as Gamestation, this is to do with faulty firmware downloads. This is a bad problem for me because my broadband connection isn't what you call up to scratch. I would caution anybody buying this because it seems to be an upcoming problem and Sony don't even know what it is. Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome console and I had a heck of a time on MGS4 and COD4, the graphics on MGS4 are truely stunning but because of this problem and the fact that I've only had it for only 2 months, I am deeply upset.
Thinking of getting a PS3? June 15, 2008 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
Well, I'll keep it quick and give you my opinion of the PS3.
POSITIVE:
Great graphics of course, which in my opinion are superior to the Xbox.
Surely the best and most comfortable controller out there at the moment. Contols are always easy to pick up and remember.
Some great games out there (MGS4 etc.)
Daft as it sounds, feels like a quality product.
NEGATIVE:
Took me aaaaaages to get it online. The amount of faffing I had to go through was unbelievable.
The online play itself is not as good as the Xbox Live. Online play tends to be alot more annonymous and in a way less competitive. Some people may like this, but I enjoy getting praise for my online domination :P
While alot of the games have excellent graphics, there are also ALOT of games out there with sub-par graphics, which are almost identical to PS2. Expanding on this, many games, such as Resistance and Heavenly Sword have a very rushed and almost cheap feel to them, which is not something you want from a console that will cost you about 300 when you are done.
The number of DECENT PS3 exclusive games is pretty shocking. I don't think anything has come out yet to rival the likes of Halo 3 or Mass Effect.
OVERALL:
The PS3 is a great laugh and will bring hours of fun to anyone and MGS4 is a good enough reason alone to buy one. HOWEVER, for those wanting to play online, I would suggest the 360 is far superior as at the moment almost every online aspect of the PS3 is apalling.
Hype Over. What's it really like.... June 9, 2008 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
A tad dissapointing is all I can say. I listened to the hype so much that I flogged my XBob 360 and all its games so I could advance to the next level with the mighty PS3. First mistake. The library of games at the minute is good but not fantastic. Fair to say it's still in its infancy so give it time, but right now it has its limitations.
Good looking? Absolutely NOT. This is without doubt one of the ugliest games machines I have seen. What were you thinking Sony? It looks like a retro betamax video player from when I was a kid - surely that's not what they wanted to create... is it? It's big, it's ugly and it's far too shiny to blend in. Ok so looks aren't everything, it has to perform but come on, I still have to see the darn thing when I'm not playing it!
I got 4 games the day I bought the machine, Fifa 08 was great on the 360 so I was expecting even more shiny graphics. Maybe it's just the game then that even when connected through HDMI it looks absolutely identical to the 360 version so no improvements there. COD4 next then and what a game on the 360! Again completely identical here, no graphical improvements. Formula 1 next. Now this is where PS3 has the upper hand as there is NO F1 game on 360 (criminal) so OK graphics and gameplay are great but no WOW factor after seeing graphics from other driving games on 360.
I'm starting to worry here, have sold a fantastic gaming system and all my games collection for a more ugly machine which gathers dust like a magpie gathers bling, which other than having blue ray is actually no better?
Well let me get onto the final game - Motor storm. I have to be honest this one blew me away! Incredible graphics, and the kind of gameplay you just need to come back to time and time again.
This is like wipeout was to the PS1, it really shows of the capabilities and possibly what is yet to come! Hope it continues in that direction.
All in all What do I think in comparrisson?
Well, with hindsight I wouldn't have got rid of my beloved 360 to get this if I'd known in advance what I know now. Oh yeh and the 360 had a 120gb hard disc, this has 40gb and it's far more expensive!
If you have a 360 and are thinking about changing, I wouldn't recommend it. At least not for now. There really isn't enough difference to warrant losing the looks, the disc space and the catalogue of software. I wasn't impressed enough with the PS3. It's a fantastic system and I know it will eventually get the games it deserves but for now I have to see that big bulky ugly curved shiny thing under my TV and I miss the slick 360.
