Mama Mia thumbs down January 5, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Despite the quality of Meryl Streep's Voice and the 'Does you mother know your out' routine the rest was frantic giddy idiotic dancing etc. All the actors looked as if they were on Speed. And Julie Walters was hopelessly miscast I was embarrased for this fine actress. Also the 'bride'didn't resemble Meryl Streep (her Mother) or any of the three men claiming her as a daughter. The casting agent got it wrong! The music was great thanks to the talent and knowledge of the english language of the Swedes. This production didn't do them justice though.
Great film! January 4, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Went to see this film at the cinema with the girlies, not really knowing what to expect. What a great film it is! Had to buy the DVD.....a must for any ABBA fan, or anyone who enjoys a good movie. Have to say though my husband was very disapointed to see 'James Bond' singing, he couldn't believe 007 would take such a 'girl's role'. Oh well, still a great film.
Wonderful January 4, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was hesitating to go see this but it turned out to be fantastic - in a completely kitchy way but that's the point. No one can claim to sit down to this and expect Citizen Kane. Meryl Streep sings very well, the others don't, but it's all such good fun and everyone is clearly having a fabulous time. Suspiciouly good Streep/Brosnan chemistry I thought, but maybe I am overinterpreting here... Great fun anyway.
Simply awesome! January 4, 2009 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film was amazing! I went to watch it with my parents the night it was released and the cinema was packed out! Meryl Streep was brilliant playing the character of Donna and I have a feeling Amanda Seyfreid will be a star in the future as she played her role perfectly. Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan were surprisingly good and their singing voices made the film entertaining and enjoyable. I hadn't seen the stage production but after seeing the film I do want to see it in the West End. I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end and as soon as I came home I pre-ordered the DVD and bought the soundtrack! I recommend this to anyone who is an ABBA fan or to anyone that just enjoys a good film! If you haven't seen it yet for whatever reason, buy the DVD and you won't be disappointed. And if you're like me you will be watching it over and over again!
utter drivel January 3, 2009 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I heard the hype, so I bought the DVD. More fool me. I'm sure the stage show is great but this is a stinker - and an utter waste of money. This is not a feel good movie, it is a load of actors who obviously needed the money proving that they can't sing by massacring Abba songs. The story is a tenuous connection between songs with more plot holes than a sieve and the characters appear to have been created from the purest cardboard. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING THIS. Borrow it from some sucker like me who already has. Anyone who thinks this is a feel good movie probably laughed when the Titanic sank.
