A decent bit of kit for the price December 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first external HD and Western Digital product and i have to say im pretty impressed with it. This is not to say it doesn't have a few flaws (you can't turn your PC on with it plugged in and i couldn't copy and paste transfer a few of my massively stupid high res' videos) but all in all im happy with my purchase. The unit itself is rugged and although it scratches easily and the case came off when i dropped it (but went back on easily enough) ive managed to haul it around the world and it still works fine despite the cosmetic blemishes. There's also a few clever little innovations such as a 10 min power saver as well. This unit is a solid little chunk of metal about the size of a thick dictionary so don't expect a lightweight flimsy plastic credit card that fits in your pocket!
When the prices of the 1tb drop down im definately going to purchase another WD hard drive.
Cant Seen A Problem! December 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Had the 500 gb version for around 4 months, I have filled it with music and take it to gigs with me *(im a dj) I am yet to find a problem, The passport version does have the advantage of being powered by USB but this looks great on my desk and has been reliable so far. I have worked in the I.T. Trade for many years and the brand is very good, ALL HARD DRIVES FAIL FROM TIME TO TIME! so you should do as i am instead of getting one massive drive would be better to get 2 cheaper smaller ones and back them up with each other. And thats what im going to do buy one more 500 and all should be safe and sound. hope this helps! see youtube jearley2424
Good value for money December 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This hdd is good value for money, however upon using for a week the adapter packed up. tried to register online and said i was out of reigon for warranty, so i called WD up and they were fantastic, apparently i recieved a U.S version, so they have changed the warranty to give me a 3yr uk warranty and a new adapter. Therefore i cannot fault WD only Amazon for this minor detail. I dont mind if things go wrong as long as they get fixed and WD were quick.
Problem after problem... December 11, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Save yourself a lot of hassle and avoid this product! I've had mine for only 6 months and now I've had enough... I've only used this 5 or 6 times to back up crucial data and in that time had the following problems:
* Backed up around 100 gig of data, the drive gets knocked VERY GENTLY, and the result? All of the data on the drive is GONE! All those hours backing up have been wasted.
* Wiped the drive and started again... Got all the data back on there, BUT, now months later it tells me that some of the folders are corrupt! Now I can't get files BACK from the backup drive! If I didn't still have the originals then I'd be screwed!
What a complete waste of time and money... There have been other little problems, but these major ones are hopefully enough to put you off! Backup drives should NOT be this fragile or temperemental!
Stay away from this!! December 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just like many other people on this site this drive also failed on me after only 1 month - it just died! I also found Western Digital customer service not very helpful - it took 4 phone calls and 2 emails to finally get them to send me a new drive - but after reading the reviews on here I wonder how long it will last for!
