Acer one : Fine - when it works! December 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Acer Aspire One A150-Ab Netbook, Linpus Linux Lite version, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 120GB HD (Sapphire Blue)
Bought this for my daughter. It is a neat compact mini-laptop. However I only purchased it 3 months ago and it has had to be returned to ACER twice already for major faults. First occasion it just died completely and required a new motherboard - second occasion the screen died completely ( still being fixed). It has not had heavy use. I can only assume that the component quality is not that good. I asked the returns staff at what point would the laptop be considered to be unacceptable and was told that it would only be replaced if the same component failed three times within the guarantee period. Hum.
Most stores have a two week minimum restock time December 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I already owned one if only for a few hours :-( I had to take it back because of a fault on the LCD display (The shop sold me the display one because before they took my money stated they have 3 in stock, after paying came back and said sorry after looking everywhere realised there was a stock discrepancy and they have zero stock)
For the short time I had the Aspire One loved it big time and now miss it lots. Very easy to use, connected onto my WiFi without a hitch. Browsing and watching Youtube videos was just as fast as both my desktop PCs (one has Windows XP the other has Linux Ubuntu and Mandriva)
The Aspire One is very hard to get hold of in the shops, and most have no idea when they are able to re stock as this is fast becoming a very popular Netbook and because I've already owned one, for the very first time ever I've paid for express delivery and Tuesday cannot come fast enough.
If I could, I would give the Acer Aspire One 10/10
UPDATE
You can download other software including Firefox 3 and Skype from the Acer website http://www.acer.com/aspireone/ choose the colour and on the bottom left hand side look for Drivers and Support. Read the install guide for each file download so you'll know what you are looking for.
Once downloaded onto your Aspire One you will need to know how to look and execute each file to get the software working.
In the files menu look and click on My Files
Once opened look at the menu along the top and click to drop the menu under View.
Click on the View As Advanced Mode
Along the same menu options on the far left hand side you see an arrow pointing up, click on that once then click again (this opens up the parent folders)
Look for the tmp folder as this is where the software you downloaded is stored.
First click on the Zip file then in the same tmp folder look for the folder which ends in .sh, open the folder and you will see the install program, double click on that will install the chosen program.
I hope all goes well with your new Aspire One, it's a great little machine
One of the best netbooks December 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have to admit it, when I was checking out the netbook section in a local electrical store I was torn between two models - the Asus 901 and the Acer Aspire One. At the end the only reasons for choosing the Aspire were the fact that the customer service from Acer has been excellent in the past, and because of the larger keyboard. Once I had received the netbook from Amazon, opened it and switched it on I decided to install ubuntu linux as the linpus OS was too simple - and because you can now use iPlayer on the alternative OS! So, with a few changes to ubuntu it works fine and is much better (instructions can be found in the ubuntu documentation). Also, the build quality of the netbook is very good and feels sturdy unlike some other alternatives. The keyboard and screen are good - the size of the keyboard is just about big enough for the user to touch type. The screen is bright and of a large enough size to be of use, also the resolution means that pictures can be seen in good detail.
Overall, I would recommend that you should buy this netbook in preference to any other system - and in fact a full size laptop. As with a decent OS such as ubuntu, openSUSE or fedora you get all of the advantages of a full size laptop. And it costs significantly less!
A truly neat piece of kit! December 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had my Acer Aspire One for just over one week and I'm still in love!
Here's the best things about it. It's size and weight are perfect but even though the keyboard is smaller than I'm used to it's surprisingly good. The screen quality is excellent. It connected immediately to my local network, the browsing speed is superb and the connectivity around the house is better than my Mac! Setting up my email account was a doddle and incoming emails still appear on my main PC in Outlook even if I've opened them on the Acer. Downloading MP3 files is simple, the sound quality surprisingly good, particularly with headphones. Installing Skype proved a bit of a problem and you need to get behind the interface to add and remove programmes. Once I'd done this I was able to install other programmes with ease. The webcam is a bonus and works well although I've not managed to get it to work with Skype. (Tip: when downloading Skype make sure you chose the Fedora version). All other installed programmes seems fine and on the whole I'm very impressed with the Linux system. It's a great system for anyone who is new to computers. My only gripe with the Acer is that the trackpad is a bit clunky. I've invested in a Lupo wireless mouse which has greatly enhanced my overall experience. I'd have to give this little machine 10 out of 10. It's certainly great value for money.
Outstanding Laptop ! December 2, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is NOT A NETBOOK but a fully fledged laptop. I have installed XP HOME which allows me to use my Office XP perfectly. The 8.9" screen is perfectly sized and has a great resolution. 120GB is ample storage for music and vids within reason 1GB RAM is great. The processor handles itself superbly. I Watch movies, listen to music, browse the internet, play games and create Excel spreadsheets. It also comes with a nice cover which helps the laptop slip into any bag safely.
