Rubbish - pitch black and very restricted movement! December 21, 2008 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
A good idea for a game but pitch black - you can hardly see anything at all and the movement is very restricted. I played this for one day and then got rid of it!!!
Necromorph hungry December 16, 2008 Dead Space is a fine addition to the survival horror genre. Taking elements from various popular sc-fi movies and combining them into a solid gaming experience.......so let's get down to the nitty gritty shall we?
The graphics are the first thing that really set this game apart and give the game a very realistic and immersive feel, secondly the exclusion of a HUD also adds to the players immersion and surrounding. The story and game flow smoothly, lack of cutscenes keep you interacting with everything around you and moving forward. The tension and suspense keep you hooked as you dont know what will come around the corner and possibly take your head off!
I don't understand why people say this game gets repetitive or there is a lot of backtracking, it is very minimal and many games over the years have re-used certain levels or environments to add longevity to their completion, so don't single this game out. Another thing i read in reviews was that the stasis gun makes it too easy to defeat enemies......if that is the case then isnt that the same for Bullet-time in Max Payne?
I do agree the ending was a bit of a let down and leaves unanswered questions but more than likely there will be a sequel in the works to add to this gripping franchise.
This was a very challenging game and would test even the most hardcore gamer.I thoroughly recommend it to all as you wont be disappointed. This sleeper hit deserves more credit than what it's been given.
5/5
p.s. i still love Max Payne tho lol
Decent Game December 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is creepy, rock solid hard and immense fun in parts. Thoroughly enjoyed all the battles with the various alien creatures, not so much the Zero G bits where you move around a load of objects. Its one of the toughest games Ive played in ages.
Pros: Game in fast, addictive and requires a bit of thought rather than just aimlessly blasting at things, decent variety of weapons, addictive and fun, you can develop your weapons and armour and purchase ammo and health as required.
Cons: Main character Isaac should have been able to speak, Zero Gravity sections are a bit boring, some levels get as bit tedious as they are often similar to the previous ones, Once finished there is no reason to play the game ever again, the ending is a let down.
The Cons prevent it from being a classic but this game is highly recommended to any Survival Horror fps fans as it combines both. A good 1 player experience that will keep you coming back for more. Add a bit more to the story to it via some cut scenes and this probably would have been contender for best game yet on the PS3.
Dead Space is Dead Good! December 8, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
After playing `Dead Space' for just an hour or so, I knew straight away that this was going to be one of the best games of 2008 and now that I'm about 10 hours into the story, I'm not wrong! Why is it so good? First of all it takes the excellent over-the-shoulder perspective of the classic Resident Evil 4 mixes it with the ground-breaking physics of Half-Life 2 and then has all of the scares and a similar setting to the terrifying Doom 3 which ends up as one of the best all-round survival horror shooters ever.
The graphics are some of the best I've seen on the PS3 with some very impressive lighting effects and very detailed surfaces and characters. The music and sound effects are really scary, especially when playing this using a surround sound system or with headphones. The HUD and maps etc are all on a display that comes out of the main character's helmet - there is no pausing to look at where you're going or use your inventory so you'll need to use your best tactics to find a safe place to do this! Video logs from your colleagues or others from the ship are also displayed this way, which is good as it stops long cut-scenes and you can continue exploring the ship whilst they are playing. You can also slow-down time and move objects using telekinesis (similar to the gravity gun in HL2). Another good feature is the zero-gravity rooms where you can jump to other platforms and items and enemies float around the environment. The action is fairly fast-paced and is also very gory. The puzzles are quite challenging at times and using the character's special skills will take one or two attempts to get right on occasions.
Overall this is a very good game that has kept me really entertained and I'm not near the end yet. I highly recommend it to fans of survival horror, shooters, sci-fi horror and basically anyone after a really decent action game.
Dead Space, A total suprise! December 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It speaks volumes about this game that I actually managed to acquire the platinum trophy...It achieved a level of fun and excitement I haven't felt in a game in years.
As you can tell, I bought the PS3 version and it is in my top 5 of this year already.
I suppose the reason I like this game so much, is the fact that it recreates the same sense of adventure and horror, that Resident Evil 4 provided all those years ago. Granted it doesn't have much in the way of originality, but in all honesty, that never bothered me throughout the entire time I spent playing.
Another thing about this game, that I only realised about 3 chapters in, is that there are no cut-scenes. All the story is given to you via video messages and audio logs scattered about the game (think Bioshock).
It maintains a great level of progression, meaning that you don't start out superhuman and the game gets harder and harder. Instead you have the basic suit, health bar and inventory, which can be increased as you progress using credits dropped by enemies or found on your journey.
Graphically, the game looks amazing, with enemies that look like something from nightmares. To the varying areas in the ship (Ishimura) you and your team are trying to repair.
Finally, Is this game actually scary?
Most certainly. Played under the right circumstances, this game is terrifying. With enemies jumping out at you from airvents, or dark corridors with grizzly echoes of some poor survivor meeting their end. The sounds of main character Isaac Clarke gasping for air as you make your way through space. All combine to make you feel that this ship wants you dead!
This game is pretty much a dead cert. Buy Now. And play in the dark!
