Just great, buy it! December 17, 2008 I'm running it on an old AMD 3700+ with an 800GTO graphics card and it still plays well with a few of the settings turned down. Game play is none stop edge of the seat stuff. Got broadband then buy this.
Left speechless. December 11, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
For me, this has been a year of disappointments when it comes to gaming. Some have been released far too buggy to play effectively, others were just plain bad.
I am unsurprised and pleased to say that Left 4 Dead does not belong to the above mentioned group. Valve have once again outdone themselves. Gabe Newell was quoted some time ago as saying that L4D was probably the companies finest work to date, the man knows his stuff.
There is no 'real' story here, which in 99% of cases would have it ridiculed on the spot. L4D gets away with it for three reasons:
1. It doesn't pretend to have a 'proper' story 2. The games protagonists, 4 human survivors, are so brilliantly characterised that they could single handedly carry the game without plot 3. It's so much fun that you simply won't care.
There are 4 large campaigns, 5 chapters to a campaign. Chapters are seperated by places called safe rooms where you, as the survivors, must reach to move onto the next chapter and so on. There is a slight problem here in that there are hordes of Infected (zombies to you and I) in the way.
Each campaign has a very different feel to it, the opening sees your motley crew making their way through urban locales such as city streets, a subway station, sewers and so on whereas another campaign sees you out in the wilderness, sprinting through corn fields trying desperately to reach an old abandoned house where you can hole up to defend yourselves against the horde.
The horde - mainly comprised of regular zombie grunts, (think fast moving 28 days later zombies, not shuffling Resident Evil sloths) are backed up by 5 more specialised zombies, all with unique abilities that require players to strategise against them in order to survive.
I won't spoil them for you but as an example, lets take the Boomer. This guy can vomit on you if he gets close, this vomit then attracts loads of grunt zombies and they ONLY attack who he vomited on, so the survivors can scatter in panic and leave the poor guy who got vomited on to take a real beating OR, they can have the guy who got vomited on take up a position behind them and stand infront of him, effectively blocking the horde and rendering them no more threatening to the group than a stubbed toe.
The AI Director works in the background of every game, calculating how well your group is doing as well as other factors and thusly deciding when and where to spawn zombies, weapons, health, everything. It makes the game infinitely replayable (I've played for over 40 hours now, still not bored).
The graphics are great as in most games powered by the Source Engine (with particular regard to the lighting system which in my opinion is second to none). The sound is brilliantly executed, audio cues become easily synonymous with certain events (such as horde spawning, giving your group a few seconds to prepare) which helps against confusion in amongst the madness.
What I would say though is that playing this offline is quite boring as the AI teammates could have really used an order system instead of just following you about like sheep. Also, when playing online, I can't stress enough that Expert difficulty is the only way to play. The rest of the difficulty levels are far too forgiving in my opinion and detract away from the tension that is so obviously intended to be there.
Final note, the Versus mode (where you get to play 4v4 as the special zombies vs the survivors) works surprisingly well and is a good laugh, especially with 3-7 mates.
All in all, I can't recommend this enough. It's sheer genius on the most simple and fun level. You'll get hours and hours out of it.
Great game for Co-op, match-making can be a pain December 8, 2008 A great game providing that you have a decent Internet connection. My only major complaint about the game is the match-making, for not being able to see your ping before you begin the game. European players mixed with American hosted servers = Lag. Players also occasionally leave in the middle of a game so you'll be stuck with AI controlled bots untill new players arrive. Versus mode is fun but is abit repetitive seeing as how there's only 2 maps available to play on at the moment. We'll have to wait and see what kind of mods will be available to improve the game as it is. You may want to buy a mic if you don't already have one, having one will give you a much better gaming experiance since communicating by voice is a more practical way of communicating then typing when you're in the heat of a battle.
A good laugh December 5, 2008 Great game!
Its good fun being one of the monsters on multiplayer :) Cdkey went straight into steam no problems. Steam then automatically downloads the latest patch (which only took a couple of minutes)
Its great in small chunks :-D December 3, 2008 After getting this game about two-three days ago I've been playing it fairly intermittently and I think that's how its meant to be played. I agree with other reviews when they say it gets boring after a while, yeah thats when you stop playing. Go away and do something else then play it again a while later.
Its beautifully presented, the graphics are gorgeous. I love nothing more than mindlessly popping a few zombies heads of once in a while, the sounds are great though they do get a little annoying and it gets to the stage of "I've heard it all before" but thats when I turn my music up.
The gameplay is great, its definitely a much better game online, though you do need a fast connection otherwise lag is horrendous. The VS mode is awesome fun.
Overall, yeah good game!
