Annoyed December 29, 2008 0 out of 12 found this review helpful
Looks like a great game to play, but I must be the only unfortunate soul to purchase this game twice. The first time the game froze just after the intro and the disc just spun without end; this was sent back. The second time I was more optimistic about about my chances of playing this game, but alas my hopes were cruelly dashed. It froze yet again and refused to work. Does anoyone else have a problem with this or have I just attracted some bad karma when it comes to Xbox games? Watch this space if other games from my collection decide to 'go west'. (and yes my Xbox works perfectly fine with other games)
Hopefully setting a new trend in co-op gaming... December 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Back during the prominent days of the arcade machine someone had a great idea where they would include a second joystick/set of buttons on an arcade machine so that friends could team up with eachother to try and beat the game; co-op was born. This is probably the best thing that has ever happened to gaming and there have been far too few games coming out recently designed for co-op, especially when you consider how easy it is to find friends online to play with. When i first started playing L4D i was reminded of a PS2 game called obscure. It was a pretty generic survival horror game but it had a co-op mode that worked, and it made the game that little bit more awesome.
When i started playing L4D i was reminded of what co-op should be all about; buddies shooting over eachothers shouldes at a common enemy, giving up your only med kit for a pal in need etc. and as far as this goes L4D is unmatched in a creating a sense of team unity.
I won't give you a full rundown of everything good about this game as this has been done in other reviews but there are some things that have been left out in these other reviews. A lot of people neglect the versus mode, and even though the co-op campaign is the main feature of the game, the versus mode is still enjoyable and increases the replay value even further. I will say that the zombies are a little dissapointing to play, but still it's a nice addition even if it isn't a halo-beater.
The thing i must say that struck me most about L4D was the addition of split-screen co-op. Even though it is only two player, rather than four you can take a guest online to play with you in all online modes as well as for playing the campaign offline. It's a great addition and unfortunately a lot of games that have great online co-op sometimes neglect local and Lan multiplayer, so i'm glad L4D doesn't fall into this pit-trap.
In conclusion L4D has renewed my faith not only in the survival horror genre, and co-op but also in valve's source engine. There i was thinking it was a little stale; goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks...
Fun at first - boring within about 2 days December 24, 2008 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
It's strange, I don't understand how i'm one of the only ones that have been majorly disappointed with this game. I was recommended it by somebody who said it's all amazing etc but I really wish I hadn't spent the 40 now.
First of all. The graphics. They're nothing special really, if anything I think they've been lazily done. Whilst some things do look as though they've had time spent on, such as the few explosions in the game, overall they're just very average for a next gen console.
The actual gameplay. It is very fun, tearing up zombies and all that. The problem is, the weapons feel very limited, there's only about 5 different weapons. With it being zombies, weapons like sword, bats and wooden sticks would be great for the game but it's all guns which I found quite disappointing. There's only a few ways to kill the zombies which gets old very quickly. The length of the game is a major downfall. Each campaign you can do within about a half hour to 45 mins depending on the difficulty and there's only 4 campaigns. In this is just seems very repetitive and lacking any story at all.
Multiplayer is what saved this from a 1. The multiplayer is fun but only if you're on the infected team I find. Multiplayer consists of you basically doing 2 of the 4 campaigns. You take it in turns so one team is the 4 survivors, the other are infected where they attempt to kill the survivors. This switches around each 'chapter.' So although it can be fun, it is also very repetitive.
I don't know what else there is to mention on the game. I'm very disappointed with it. It's repetitive, short and just lacking in the replay value I expected. It just seems like it's been rushed out for Christmas to be honest.
I'd avoid this and go with Gears or FIFA.
2/5 - poor game
the best game on 360....its fantastic!!!! December 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its like being in a zombie film.Think dawn of the dead and your there. You play as one of four survivors as you attempt to escape the map your on in the most intense co-op gameplay I've ever played. Or play as the undead and rain the pain on the survivors...work as a cohesive team to bring down the humans. This can only get better when valve adds new downloadable content such as more maps and weopons but for now its still a sight to behold. If you dont work togeather then you will die...and die alot. So for god sake use the headphones when you play online and talk. I'll see you there. i'm rodent28 on the 360 now wheres thatshotgun ...I got some killin to be gettin on with.
Thoughts after 2 weeks play December 12, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
OK, so now I've played/owned it for at least two weeks. I'm a massive fan of the zombie genre and was looking forward to this title when it was launched. I'd say it's like an unofficial "28 Days later" for xbox 360 as the zombies can be very fast unlike some of Romero's films. After 2 weeks I'm still playing this game and enjoying it although it is too short I still enjoy replaying the chapters in solo or online play. I'm hoping a sequal will appear and include more interactive scenery, vehicales, more characters or customisation, more weappons etc. The game is a basic corridor shooter with few alternate routes to take - although the mass of enemies and panic when wave after wave appear can still cause confusion. Graphics are good but not next gen - more like a pc game from a few years ago. The shortness of the game is both good and bad. It's nice not to have to spend 80 hours levelling up etc to complete a game but a few more chapters would have been nice. It's a great starting point to what I hope will become a good series of gamesthat build on each other but many may consider it to be a basic shooter with short play life.
