CoD4 KILLER December 26, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
It's an epic return to form for CoD with World at War.
However World at War in the eyes of CoD translates as America & Russia, Quote me if I'm wrong but didn't Britain, France, Australia, Canada.. well in short THE WORLD take part in WWII? If yes then why is it called World at War?
I do like this game, it has all the nice touches CoD's of old put it + Bayonets. Awesome.
CoD4 In my gods honest opinion was tragically awful. Once again AMERICA takes on UNNAMED TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS (Iraqi's) in UNNAMED LOCATIONS (Iraq) and features it's lap dog GREAT BRITAIN fighting the reformed SOVIET UNION! It was diabolical, I'll admit it had some nice touches here and there but overall it was just Pro-American tosh. If your a COD4 fan-boy please go & die in the nearest fire. If they're aren't any try drinking the draino under the sink.
But they did some good with CoD World At War. It's still a tad to linear for my liking, but I do like the gun battles you can have a certain points, I love the banzai attacks, the flame thrower, BAYONETS and of course I love the gore! Finally a WWII game with some proper gore. Well done. They've also seemed to steer the game into a more darker setting there's a sense of dread an terror, almost horror that they've worked into the story single player whatever you want to call it. Very nice touch indeed, it does kind of supress the usual gung-ho American attitude that most WWII FPS games possess MoH being a typical YOU Vs Germany, Hitler & The Third Reich.
The soundtrack is odd. It's hard to explain it, it's modern for sure so it doesn't really suit the game. It also has some horrid screaching at times, strange. It's not good & it's not bad. It's just ...
There's alot to like in this CoD but there's also alot to improve on, it's miles better than CoD4
Now for some negatives. Still very Pro-American. No Other countries take part other than Russia. & of course they included a dreadful tank mission, please fella's if your going to do a tank mission do it properly, linear doesn't do it justice.
There is a blatant rip off of the film Enemy At The Gates. (I know they've done them before but before they were subtle. This one took this p***)
What was the deal with the Black-Cats mission? Tip of the hat to them I'm sure but it just didn't fit with the rest of the game.
The AI is quite pants as they only seem interested in shooting you & not your squadmates.
There are some awful online exploits & bugs which still plague the game today.
The online dogs were a bad choice in my opinion. Two bites and your dead or one bite and all you need to finish you off is a slap on the back. Ridiculous.
Online vehicles only include two tanks, which only occur between the Russians & Germans, why not the Americans & Japanese?
You can only play 2 player co-op mode on one console and not 4. Highly dissapointing.
There's a ton of other stuff I love & hate about the game but the good out weighs the bad, partly because a big % of that is because it's back in WWII a proper war not some stupid modern conflict, sorry I mean walkover.
**SPOILER WARNING** My final thought on the game is at the end of the single player campaign, once completed you unlock a game mode called German Nazi Zombies. WHICH IS AMAZING!
One slight problem December 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My son got this for Christmas, completed it in a day! it's a great game but he has a problem, it night be a 15 rating in the UK but the online pegi rating is 18 (parental control level 9) this stops him playing on line and boy am I getting it in the neck, funny really COD4 was/is fine for him to play on line but this version will not allow him to :(
Anyone know a work around apart from building him a new profile :(
WW2 with the same old COD4 engine December 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Its just COD4 but everything had been made worse:
Graphics: Is it me or do they seem slightly worse if not slightly more blurry/upscaled looking.
Single player: Enemies continue spawning until you get past certain points in which some enemies stop spawning and others start, bar the occasional different mission like cod4 rip off 'vendetta' etc.
Gamerscore: 1000GS within a couple days of playing isn't a challenge and wheres the competitive online achievements?
Multiplayer: Worse maps that encourage yet more sitting and contain what are only annoyances in tanks that everyone rush to get at the start and if you see one then your only option is to hide. Perks suck more like the minute long last stand that almost everyone uses and was the most pathetic, nooby perk of cod4 is now majorly improved. Kill streak perks suck more like the 'back into a corner and stop having fun while you shoot them' dogs and the artillery strikes which take ages to come and then last ages and just ruin the overall gameplay. I swear slightly more bullet lag and when there running it just doesn't quite connect like it used too (and then the last stand will probably happen). Rifle grenades are a pain on hardcore search and destroy which is usually my favourite mode. Oh, and even the teamkill system has been degraded in that each person can now take a shot at you at the start of each game but you can only take 1 back and then you get kicked for 2nd(not to mention everyone seems to teamkill when defusing the bomb now). The sound also when you have 1 minute left is very off putting and footsteps in general are far more off putting. Also now you press the start menu(on hardcore) and yes you guessed it! they took away the minimap for some reason(think its for that reconnaissance perk or whatever but wasn't motivated enough to achieve that level), which is just plain annoying making you have to perk it. Ooo almost forget the respawn system which has stuck me next to enemies and enemy dogs a countless number of times in which I have instantly died with no chance.
Overall: It just seems like every single major and minor part of the game has been should I say 'unimproved' from its predecessor, and throw in yet another WW2 setting and it makes for an overall package that is a shadow of how good its prequel was. 3/5 is generous as if you havn't played previous game its still quite good, but I think its unacceptable to make a sequel worse in every way than its predecessor without any improvements. If you liked COD4 then I would rent this before buying as you will be probably be disappointed.
BEST SHOOTER ON MARKET (BETTER THAN COD4) December 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this game after playing many hours on COD4. I thought that COD4 could not be topped. I was wrong.
The multiplayer gaming features were the main reason I bought this game. At any obscure hour of the morning there are in excess of 50,000 people playing, and at busy times, there are well over 100,000 people playing, meaning you can always get a game. Games like gta4 struggle to get the attendance in the multiplayer maps.
Graphics are very good especially in 1080p. The campaign is also very good. The whole game is entirely addictive. Had me hooked in minutes.
I was initially unsure about the WW2 setting after the modern COD4, however it is a refreshing change to have such different weapons. You can also drive tanks which adds another level of realism and challenges.
I would recommend this game thoroughly, and would give it 10/10.
