1 out of 5 stars Another Pile of Rubbish   December 13, 2008

SIX reasons not to buy this game

1. LAG!!!! Lots of it

2. Dumb goalkeepers that do some really stupid things and half the time couldn't catch a cold never mind the ball

3. So called 'Top players' that are almost impossible to tackle and doing some amazing very unrealistic things that in real life they couldn't do on the training ground

4. Opposition defenders defend intelligently like tracking back and pushing your play wide but your defenders charge for the ball when they haven't got a chance to get there leaving your wings open for through balls, one-two plays don't guarantee getting past defenders but if they do it again your defender comes forward leaving the attacker running unmarked into space, even though the defender your controlling is already marking the player with the ball

5. Feels scripted e.g I played the same match in master league a few times and the same player scored against me doing the same thing around the same time towards the end of every game to bring the game level.

6. Email Konami about the lag problem and it is a big problem and you get the same response. They may as well say too bad got your money and theres nothing you can do about it.

NO reason to buy this game.

Keep your money or buy a different game where the makers care. ABSOLUTE JUNK!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Game Of Footy!   December 13, 2008

I love this game. I know it is getting slated when compared to FIFA 09 but for me on gameplay this wins hands down.
I bought FIFA on release and loved it but have become very bored with it recently. Yeah it has all the glitz and the gameplay is good but I found it irritating and frustrating. When you scored it just never seemed right somehow. Also I found with all previous FIFA's after a while it became very easy to score. You find a situation where 9 times out of ten you will score.
I have only been playing PES for a few days but it's like a reunion with an old friend. It seems so right and when you score a goal it feels more realistic.
I may get frustrated with this after a few months and what FIFA back who knows, but I don't think so.
Each to there own I guess. FIFA is a great game but for me I am glad I came back to PES.

I can understand why this game has recieved some negative reviews but not the quantity of them. I got this game on the day of release but refrained from writing a review because i was so frustrated with it. There was even a controller thrown at one point! As i have been playing pro evo since the days of ISS on the original playstation i was determined to stick with it and see if it grew on me which it certainly did. Ill admit that this is far towards the simulation side of football games as you would ever want to go and they possibly took it a bit far(some of the players cant dribble past jogging speed) but it encourages people to play a passing game, use the one-two function and create better team moves. Gone are the days when Michael Owen could run in a straight line through your entire team in about 2 seconds. Much like in real life dribbling is about close control and direction shifts, only applying sprint when there is some space to run into and the ball is away from the opposition player. As such first touch is even more important than in previous versions and it can be far more effective to stand still if in space so as to draw defenders out before commiting them with a pass. People used to sprinting everywhere with little patience will find the computer to be irritatingly good at tackling and defending. If you press left bumper after a pass the passer will pass the ball then make a forward run, combinations of these give-and-go passes can be used to devastating effect in this game. Also people familiar with all previous versions of pro evo will know that some versions the shot bar is more like a height bar with the shot being determined by your players stride pattern in relation to the shot and his attribute "shot power". That is the system used in this version so people trying to half power it and blast it into the net will not score may goals unless their players have good enough technique to control that shot. As for the tackling system it is very similar to the previous version with holding of tackle to muscle them, but now tapping it seems to more freely attempt a stab tackle than it did with its predecessor. This may be a bit more than most people want to think about with a football game with it being very difficult to score with basic passes and long dribbles but as with all other versions every single player action can be taken to an extremely high level and if you understand the real life game of football and are prepared to "bring your A game" for want of a better expression to every match then the football that can be played on this version can occasionally be like watching a frantic real life top 4 battle. This is even more the case in master league where the new champions league section brings tough game after tough game. One of my friends was loving playing two player versus the computer because as he rightly said the computer can now finally give your a real game. With better defence, better passing and some evil corner kicks the computer can now score against you with means other than 35 yard free kicks(which went in 90 percent of the time on top level on the last game). Many people will find this game too slow or get frustrated at the lack of dribbling but i find that all these changes have made this game more realistic and at the end of the day pro evo has always been a simulation game with fifa being the arcade alternative. However hard this game is to play it is worth it when you see the football that can be played on it.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE   November 28, 2008

What a major disappointment this game has become. pro (up until number 6) was really only 1 of 2 games i used to play. after eagerly waiting for 2008 and hearing the terrible reviews, for the 1st time even i didn't buy the game.

so a year later and the top guys at konami talking about how they have sorted the problems and have made online...........playable, i once again was eagerly waiting for 2009 to drop and guess what...... i was disappointed.

ball sound - terrible
online - terrible
A.I - terrible
PRO 2009 - TERRIBLE

This game will sell by the bucketload, but Konami are still not giving the faithful the game they deserve. Last years Pro Evo was embarrassingly awful from a franchise with a real quality pedigree. This time Konami attempts to put right all the flaws from the last 2 dire installments.

It has always been about gameplay with Pro Evo, and apart from a few niggly AI problems, the gameplay is much better. Nearly good enough to overlook all the other flaws - Online is still unplayable, the menus are still ugly, too many unlicenced teams (yes it matters), "Become a Legend Mode" is poor etc

Pro Evo 2009 is good for a kick about, until you get bored and dig out the old PS2, load up Pro-Evo 4(or 5), and feel your smile return. With Pro Evo 4, I used to get up early so I could get a few matches in before work, often making myself late. The only reason to get up early with Pro Evo 2009 is to get it back to the rental shop.
