A Battlefield New July 5, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The battlefield series has been around for a while now and, like Call of Duty, doesn't seem to be drying up.
Having completed the single player campaign to the end I can confirm that it is enormous fun a quality which is, after all, the most necessary feature of a computer game.
In this installment of the series you are dropped into a fictional near future conflict belonging to a squad which, as the cannon fodders cannon fodder, shows little inhibition in jumping the American ship when an opportunity arises to move to pastures greener.
The plot, as always, matters little compared to the gameplay which is engaging and even challenging even on normal difficulty, which seldom gives me problems on any game. The graphics give no cause for complaint and to me showcased the capabilities of the PS3, the physics of the game however are where the game excels. The ability to blow your way through buildings to bring hell to the enemy never becomes boring and even after the rest of the game had paled I still enjoyed the ability to break down walls to get the drop on my surprised foe. The decision to leave stairs, floors and beams intact was, I feel, the right one as otherwise with the amount of firepower at your disposal battlegrounds might all become flat ruins.
There were however some points where I feel the game lets itself down. The squad dynamic, for example, feels nothing like that of COD4 where it is clear that you a grunt and someone else is in charge, in BBC your squad will follow you wherever you go and instantly enter any vehicle you enter, making it seem like you are in charge. Also whenever you poke your head around a corner all enemy fire becomes directed at you with none reserved for your squad meaning that firefights become a boring cycle of point, shoot one enemy and wait for health recharger to finish.
Some vehicle controls, especially those of the helicopter, seem a bit wooden compared with the more fluid foot controls and the proliferation of rocket launchers mean that no vehicle remains intact for long. Although some may enjoy the realism I found it annoying having to find a new vehicle after an encounter with two or three enemies, I especially remember one level where I had to switch buggy 5 or more times on the way up to an enemy base.
Overall I would strongly recommend the latest installment of Battlefield but there are aspects that could seriously do with being looked at again.
One of the best FPS of 2008 July 4, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Battlefield: Bad Company is one of those games that just gets it right when it comes to making the gameplay fun and addictive and offers so much variety in a huge sandbox world. The single player campaign is a decent length, the graphics are pretty sweet an dsome of the motion capture is the best I have seen in a game yet. The characters are likeable guys, you don't get to really know a great deal about them you just know that you like them and they will make you laugh.
The single player campaign takes these four guys on a journey to find some Gold and offers diverse and very large battlefields with some really nice graphics, an array of vehicles, weapons, special abilities and completely destructable buildings to mould into your own game. Each and every time you restart a mission it can be different as the destructable environments really change the way you can play a shooter taking away the feeling of linear settings and a restricted way of fighting. Choose from vehicles, some cool perks and a great selection of weapons and just have fun blasting your way through the battlefield and killing everyone in sight, it's just so much fun.
Multiplayer is absolutely superb and I cannot bring myself to get off it, I'm completely addicted. 8 massive sand-box diverse maps with up to 24 players with the mode Gold Rush is a load of fun and the amount of trophies and unlockables is something else. This game really rivals Call of Duty 4 online and I personally prefer it just for the variety this game has to offer in comparison.
BF: BC is a fun game with great graphics, funny guys, amazing weapons, vehicles and destructable environments and other shooters should really follow in the footsteps of this game because it is certainly doing something right. 10/10 Fantastic game!
ps. Gold Edition comes in a cool tin-like case with extra videos and weapons. Worth the purchase if you ask me because this game is a great addition to anyone's collection.
Wicked FPS July 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Am loving this game!!! Brilliant online mode that forces teams to behave as teams, by the way the levels are designed, and the gold crate system works. The single player mode is great too...not too long (but then after clocking up 200ish hours on Oblivion, not much is!)but great fun, stuff to find...and plenty to shoot at. Its simple...like war games? Buy Battlefield
FULL GAME REVIEW July 1, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
(Background info...)I pre-ordered this game and have been playing since i took delivery on first day of release. I had also downloaded and played the demo and have played both online and the single player story mode, i am also an avid player of Call of Duty 4....
(Review...)This game has been designed around the fact that unlike ANY other game on the market (of this class!!) - you get to BLOW UP STUFF!! Yes you name it you can blow it up and my god that make this game far more fun than anything you would have ever played in this genre.
I have been waiting ever since i played my first 'first person shooter' where you can effect the surroundings when you play. Don't worry about a sniper camping out in a roof top, just blow the roof off! He'll either die in the process or you will see a rather sheepish sniper legging it out the back door for more cover.
The single player story line is not likely to rock your world, its pretty straight forward, throughout all the maps you collect gold bars and weapons that can be dotted around the map, but this is secondary to the main focus of the game which is BLOW STUFF UP!
The vehicles are great fun, flying the helicopter is a bit tricky and not as much fun to fly as in the other Battlefield games but it makes up for it when you get to level an entire village from the air!
In single player; objectives show as a red triangle - how you reach the triangle is sometimes up to you with big maps to roam about in and cause mayhem along the way, taking down trees and fences as you hurtle along.
I would never give up Call of Duty 4 for this game as the playing styles are very different - i do not think these game compete with each other at all - if anything you need to have them both as the play styles are very different.
One last thing - In some places the intelligence of the bots are non existent in standard mode, don't play easy mode - you will be bored senseless with no real challenge! And in a few places the game seemed to get confused when you respawn - on one of the single player maps i was protecting a tank, died and when i repsawned the tank i was protecting had turned into an enemy tank that could not be destroyed - doh!
Great game - go get it and blow up stuff!! it's what you were born to!
Quality game (MUST BUY FOR FPS FANS) June 28, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
i have been tracking the progress of this game since 2006. I have always been exited about it and when the gold edition arrived at my house and cracked it open i loved it. The frostbite engine really raises the bar in terms of graphics, and especially audio, onestly i have never heard such rich, detailed and powerful sounds from an first person shooter, or infact any video game i have ever played. The singleplayer is exiting, uses multiple game types and has hiliriously witty humour. The multiplayer really is amazing, the gold rush mode brings a breath of fresh air the genre. Also, there are little new features like the dog tag system and badges, along with a deep, rewarding ranking up and weapon unlocking. Anyone who liked Call Of Duty 4 will spend some serious time on the multiplayer on this game, and with enjoy the singleplayer.
