back to basics July 28, 2008 Played this over a mates recently and was again taken in by the incredible visuals and awesome gameplay. I thought it could never possibly live up to the original, but it does, and then some. Ever since i scrapped my old PC when the 360 first came out, ive been looking forward to getting back to basics with unreal tournament- the godfather of the modern deathmatch/CTF/territories game modes that are integral to most online shooters today. The game is great, everything you look for in an online game- pace, flow, rapid killing, that adrenaline rush of a monster kill. I can imagine single player mode getting tedious after a while. The only thing i cant understand though, is why the 360 version is so much more expensive on here than the other two platforms. the PS3 version -10 cheaper. for PC -25 cheaper! common amazon play fair, just because we have better taste in platform, doesnt mean we have to suffer higher prices the majority of the time. sort it out.
A champion FPS that is both hectic and challenging. July 27, 2008 "Unreal Tournament III" is a first-person shooter in which you are part of a team (usually - sometimes it's just one-on-one) who must fulfil certain tasks within a kind of arena of some description. As well as team deathmatches (in which you simply eliminate the opposing team and try and rack up more points than them), you also get things like capture the flag, capture the flag with vehicles and warfare (this usually involves taking your team's power orb to a node, which you must try and get under your team's control to access certain other bits - it depends on the mission what will become accessible).
You start off with a basic pistol but can pick up other weapons and ammo, as well as some other things such as armour boosters, health packs and power-ups. If you die you lose all your benefits when you respawn and go back to only having the pistol. When you have a heap of weapons you can, if you wish, have the game set so that it picks the most powerful weapon for you, but if you wish to override this then you can either cycle through them with the Right Bumper, or hold down the Left Bumper and pick it from a weapon wheel using the right stick.
As well as all this, in modes where you are required to do something specific (e.g. get your opponent's flag or track down the enemy that has your flag), you get on-screen arrows pointing the way (or, at least, a way you can take), which is handy and unobtrusive. But another thing that makes UT3 really stand out is the vehicles that you get to drive. These are awesome, and range from things like a buggy called the Scorpion to a big tank called the Goliath, up to really tall things like the Necris Darkwalker! You even get to call on a hoverboard in some missions, and can latch onto another vehicle and be dragged along with it to help you get around faster.
With all of the shooters in the market UT3 had to be something a bit different to stand out, and I think it has done well. The new Unreal engine allows for some truly sumptuous graphics throughout, the weapons are varied and fun to use (although the sniper rifle is a bit of a challenge, particularly online). I would have preferred some meatier sounds for some of the guns, but what's there is still good, and some weapons also cause the character on the receiving end to get blown apart in a gory fashion, or even in some cases get incinerated to the bone, leaving just a skeleton on the floor!
As an alternative to another king of FPS games (Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360)) it does well, although arguably it doesn't quite have the same depth as Infinity Ward's classic (in that game being able to progress, unlocking different things as you go along, is an area where it wins over UT3), it makes up for it with action that almost never lets up and will make you have to be good to proceed, and those vehicles are also something that elevate it into something worth looking at.
Rated 18 by the BBFC due to strong bloody violence and gore.
Missed opportunity... July 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's such a shame. This game plays great. The graphics are good, the gameplay is awesome, the maps are varied and exciting, the weapons are interesting, albeit slightly inbalanced in my opinion, and the vehicles are brilliant. This could and should have been the best FPS game around by a country mile.
Problem: the online experience is shocking. I'm not talking about lag here; I haven't experienced a single problem with this. The whole setup is just lazy. All of the things that make Halo 3 & COD4 great online are sadly missing in this title. The ranking system is baffling, and uninteresting. There is one league table and that's it. No unlocks, no matchmaking, no playlists, no prestige, no community, no stats, no fun.
Such a shame. A fantastic FPS, and if you belong to a clan or play in a gaming league then fine, this title just about gives you what you need online. But if you're a casual gamer who enjoys being part of something, I wouldn't bother.
Totally awesome game July 14, 2008 I just wanted to say for those that knows what unreal Tournament is like, will get exacly what you expect, it is a totally awesome game, full of action and fast playing, there is no story like but that was never available on any of it's pre-decestors, I absolutely love it and for those that fancy a a match just add me to your friends list "GccLinux" is my name and Unreal Tournament III is the game.
Enjoy it.
Hardcore FPS king is back but lighter on the Xbox 360 July 8, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Don't get me wrong, this game is awesome. The graphics are beautiful and very impressive. The game is fluid and fast paced like nothign else on the market. And the weapons, vehicles and maps are well designed and well balanced. This game is essentially meant to be played online. However a long story mode and instant play action with bots will allow you to train before you venture out in the crazy human vs human arenas. The bonus 5 maps and 2 characters as well as the split screen mode are nice additions to the 360 version of the game. However this console version suffers from its inability to download and integrate user created content. Furthermore for clan members, there is no option to add a clan prefix to your name. Also, you cannot change the preference of weapon which means that you will automatically pick up and autoswitch a default more powerfum weapon when you step on it. Changing weapons is a bit of a chore and the weapon select wheel is useless. UT 3 is so fast you just die when you don't select the right tool for the job. Despite these little omissions from the PC release, UT 3 for the xbox 360 is truly an amazing game. The controls are nicely laid out, the game is fast, fresh, and addictive.
