Pretty Good Game October 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm not really a star wars fan but I thought this game was pretty good. It does have some points that are frustrating and to a certain point boring but most of this game I found entertaining. I would recommend getting it when it comes down in price.
THE GOOD - Graphics are very good. Particularly when getting into a light sabre fight! - Good soundtrack with music taken from the film - Even as a non star wars fan I found the story behind the game very well thought out. There are also 2 possible endings. - Force powers are great. I love picking up a storm trooper and bouncing him off the walls!
THE BAD - Too short. I didn't play that often and completed it in 3/4 weeks. - Quite repetitive. I like carving up storm trooper after storm trooper but I think some would get bored. - Some parts are very frustrating. Even following the instructions I had to look for an online guide (which turned out the on screen instructions weren't that accurate!) - Dodgy camera angles make some parts that should be easy, quite hard.
Deffo worth a look but like I said, wait for it to come down in price.
Do or do not, There is no try. October 23, 2008 Lucasarts try to bring the Force to next-gen consoles. With such high hopes for this game i found myself slightly disappointed upon hearing more and more negative reviews and comments. But as soon as you take your first few steps as Darth Vader, pushing away the torrent of hapless enemies all the bad things melt away.
The game on its own is your average 3rd Person action game but this is not just a game its part of that special Star Wars saga. One the high points for the game is the force powers, a fairly simple control system allows you blast, shock, push and slash your way though and there is something sweetly satisfying with sending a stormtrooper flying through a pile of boxes, seeing the room empty into the vacuum of space as you smash a window, or watch as your enemies grab on to anything (even their comrades) they can find as you try to throw them across the room.
These moments however cannot gloss over some of the many problems with the game. The level designs are anything but imaginative and combat, once mastered, becomes easy even on the highest difficulties. The over criticised glitches and bugs are often nothing more than getting stuck on a plant or behind a tree and easily remedied with a quick jump or push. While their they never pose a serious threat to the fun of the game.
Where the game truly excels however is it's story. Providing a real link between the old and new trilogy's while also pushing the game along this alone is worth the game purchase if your a fan of the saga.
Overall 7/10 - The pros far outweighs the cons to begin with but don't expect that fun to last longer than the first 5 hours, after which the combat becomes too easy and level design bland. Still a worthwhile purchase for the story and fun factor of force powers
The Force Hyperglitched October 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game has good graphics. Its fun - for a while. That's the two stars worth.
The game has very serious glitches that stop you getting many of the achievements.
It is also VERY short. Took me about three days to finish it. I guess you are expected to go back and play the levels multiple times but there is no real reward for this and the most serious problem is that it gets VERY repetitive. Even in the shortness of the game it gets dull very quickly.
I'd rather play some of the older xbox games again like Battlefront or Knights of the Old Republic. Who cares about graphics when you bored after a few hours of it!
Disappointing ! October 15, 2008 Most reviews of this game are correct, nice graphics but repetetive and boreing gameplay, all this game succeeded in doing was make me realise how good Ninja Gaiden 2 was. If you really must purchase this game wait until the price is down to about 10, it ain't worth 40, you'll only get an afternoons gameplay out of it.
far far from KOTOR... October 11, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
i've been a Star Wars fan ever since I can remember. having watched the first movie well over 100 times i guess that makes you a fan.
But on the games side, it's a love / hate relationship. Sometimes Lucasarts comes out with some amazing games like Knights of the Old Republic (1&2) and sometimes things that aren't so good. Force Unleashed (FU) is somewhere between both.
The good:
- Very polished graphics - superb representation of the worlds - Great use of force powers - Pretty good physics engine with regards to how the game plays
The ugly:
- Extremely linear storyline (ie zero thinking. follow the arrow, kill the lvl boss, move on) - Originality of story is mixed at best - Levels and combat become repetitive once you've unlocked all /most of the force powers (after about the 6th mission or so). - character level progression becomes pretty meaningless since aside from the force powers and attributes there isn't much of a real role playing game to the game anyway
Overall I've been pretty dissapointed by this game. It's one of the titles I've been waiting for after having played both KOTORS twice all the way through. But FU comes up short. Once you've unlocked most of the powers the combat becomes fairly repetitive. The boss battles aren't much fun either. You essentially have to find the pattern to beat each boss and once you find that their isn't much thinking involved. There are no side quests like in KOTOR or characters that you meet that you feel can really alter / affect the story. As I said, the story is linear. Nothing you do alters the final or can change the outcome. Basically it's like playing Sonic the Hedgehog in a Star Wars universe with some minor elements of an RPG game.
In conclusion, it depends what you like. If using the Force, immersing yourself in the Star Wars universe and playing a "platform" (aka Sonic, Devil May Cry or other level / boss) based game is for you then you'll like this game. If you're looking for an in-depth, story driven RPG like Kotor, Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls save you're money...
