Brilliant! December 1, 2008 I really wasn't expecting too much after playing the first SceneIt? game but bought it anyway because my partner loves it. I was very wrong to judge this prematurely as it is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous installment. Very impressive lineup and the game types are highly imaginative. I will be keeping this one on my shelf with all my other favourite games.
Another buzz for movies fans November 27, 2008 As a movie buff I really enjoyed the first Scene It: Lights, Camera Action. It was immediate and accessible, although the interface, presentation and voice acting were a little on the kitschy side and drifted into irritation quite often. In addition, many of the films featured seemed to smack of "couldn't get the rights to really good or more recent ones"...
This sequel, available both with and without the buzzers (as if you have the first one like me, you won't need a new set), addresses quite a few of these flaws. Overall, the presentation is slicker and less annoying - it drops the smarmy "backlot" theme of the first in favour of a more standard interface, and throws in lots of knowing, self-depracating humour. In addition load times have been also reduced, and the new films are in many cases more recent and closer to the "A" list. It is also the first game I have encountered (other than those on Xbox Live) to make full use of the new Avatar system for your gamertag.
The first Scene It was regarded by many as a source of quick gamer points, as achievements can come thick and fast - but to be honest you have to do very well and know your movies to get them, as most only onlock through winning points, maxing out categories or getting unbroken chains.
However, "scorewhores" often exploited the fact that you could pause the game and go Google the answers. This new game disables the pause feature during questions, making the achievements ones you have to earn and not just harvest. I think you'll see a lot less people with high points on this one...
With some fun new quiz types and an online play mode, Scene It: Box Office Smash is probably as close as the 360 gets to the inclusiveness of the Wii. If you're a movie fan and like party games, then this is a great buy.
A note on the buzzers: with this version you get four colour coded buzzer-controllers, which are robust, comfortable and nice-looking pieces of kit. I'm not aware of them being useable with any other game series, though I may be wrong. However, make sure you have a free USB slot on your Xbox as they use a plug-in photosensor (provided).
