Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter.
The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles
Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat
World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever
The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes

The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world.

Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity.

Key Features
  • Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
  • Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
  • Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
  • Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
  • Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

2 out of 5 stars Way to short   November 22, 2008
All comments for solo play only. I stopped playing far cry to play this one and to start with I was quite impressed with what I was seeing. All the pad controls were logical (to me), graphics looked good and generally the game play was excellent, loved running around with the flame thrower. Then the stupid bits came in like the enemy AI that allowed me to stand right next to an enemy solider whilst killing the rest of the enemy team. Or trying to drive the tank which didn't seem to want to go in any direction I wanted it to. But the most disapointing thing about this game is its length, when I suddenly found that I had completed it I just sat there and thought oh! was that it. If you are not worried about playing a ww2 game but want a big roaming shoot 'em up then try far cry at least it will last longer than this one.

wow wow wow this game is amazing trust me this is the bomb of all second world war games.

Its amazing playing it with the hdmi cable and having speakers there are flame throwers you can use to kill the enemy and useing this is better than a gun because you can toast them alive and its spreads well.

The makers of this game have taken real effort in this game and you can tell.

Alot of people say that it could be better than call of duty 4 but I think the gamelay and effects are the same as the last one but you cannot compare the 2 together because they are set in different periods.

2 out of 5 stars futile lacklustre attempt   November 20, 2008

i must say this must have been the most lacklustre game i ever played. i cant believe they handed the franchise back to treyarch after that massive disappointment of COD 3, and now they've done it again.

this is what happens when they rush things and try to cash in after the success of COD 4. ok the graphics are better compared to COD 3 but we've seen it all on COD 4, so nothing is new. but when it comes to gameplay that is when things gets worse. all it is is that players are placed in a scenario when you don't have to shoot all your enemies coz guaranteed they will respawn, and it will never end. i've done this countless times in this game, and i learned that all you have to do is rush towards the objective and everything will be ok, all the enemies will magically disappear. and you dont have to shoot any enemies in the process.

i was on this level when i'm trying to assault the parliament at reichtstag, countless neverending enemies comes rushing in. so what i did i i pushed myself forward dodging bullets and grenades and when i tripped this invisible tripwire called checkpoint reached, all of a sudden the fighting stops. i looked around and lo and behold all the enemies are gone. i said what the hell is that all about??. and all your allies will just stand there behind you and wait for you to trip this invisible wire before they finally come to their senses and move forward themselves.

overall this game is totally pointless. it's only been a year since we had COD 4 and frankly they shouldnt have came up with another COD title this early and most importantly, they shouldnt have handed it back to treyarch which i believe are not capable of making good games.

5 out of 5 stars Really,Really Ok!   November 20, 2008
Gameplay is really fun and the graphics are good. Its basically COD4 but with worse guns and better maps. The multiplayer is amazing and cool extras like NAZI ZOMBIES keep you addicted to it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Game   November 19, 2008

This is one of the best games I have ever played

I played the single player most of the Friday it came out to unlock zombie mode which is one of the best area in the game. The single player is in my opinion amazing. The grafics are great and the guns are class. The flamethrower is a real winner. The last level when you storm berlin is great non stop action.

Online is much of the same as call of duty 4. The classes the same and xp is also the same. They have not added much except now you can mount your knife to a rifle. Alothough it is the same as COD4 I still think it is extrememly fun.

Alround I think this game is great and I have to say adding the zombie mode in just made this game go from good to class. If you do not have xbox live I would not recommend buying this game as you will complete the story mode in no more than 3 days and online is amazing. A lot of people have compared this game to gears of war 2 and having not played this yet I cannot offer any opinion. I believe if you have 40 pounds handy you should definitly buy this game you wont be disapointed.

Thanks.
