It could be the funnest thing you've ever played... December 24, 2008 It was obvious this game was going to be compared to GTA IV, but in terms of fun, SR2 trumps the mighty GTA.
The story is rather forgettable, but here goes: you return as your previous character from the original Saints Row, and break out of jail to return to Stilwater. But seriously, what's the point in doing the story when you can smack people miles with a giant foam hand with the middle finger sticking up?
Talking of sticking up middle fingers, you will probably be doing a lot of that in SR2. You now get to choose your own taunts, the way you respect people, the way you walk, the way you talk, etc, etc, etc. My personal favorite taunt is The Dumper, where you pretend to take a poo on someone! But that's not all in customization values: you can customize yourself thoroughly, your cars thoroughly, and now you can even customize your crib and gang.
Graphics-wise it's a bit bargain bin compared to GTA, with some tear here and there and generally rather bland visuals. Expect a few bugs as well - there are plenty of them in SR2.
There are some interesting new weapons as well, including the the aforementioned 'Pimp Slap' (giant foam hand) and chainsaws, flamethrowers, Annihaltors (rocket launchers) and a bunch of other ways of torture.
The gameplay is the best fun ever, offline or in co-op with a mate. Driving has been criticised for being overly simplistic but I don't really care to be honest. It won't stop me from drive-bying a hooker with a friend over Xbox Live!
To conclude, Welcome back to Stilwater.
Two stars for a great soundtrack! December 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's got two stars for a great soundtrack, the game just doesn't feel right playing...cars handle bad and the island just looks bland, boring and doesn't vary. You feel like your not driving around a island but a front yawn...you get around it that quickly unlike gta where you actually feel like your driving a distance.
Character customisation is ok and that varies especially when playing with mates online etc. But overall was dissapointed from the start and couldnt get into it...to prove this I got one achievement for it rating at 10g's.
Great game! December 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I paid full price for this on pre-order as I was a huge fan of the first game, so a little annoyed at how low it is now :-( Been playing for some time now, and wow! It has all the great points of the first game, and seems to have ironed out a lot of the bad points like having to replay a whole mission with no checkpoints. Other improvements are autosave and much improved graphics and character customization. If you have never played the first, it's basically GTA with attitude! You return as your 'hero' from the first game, busting out of jail to find a world that has changed massively whilst you have been away. One small problem, it has frozen on me a couple of times, but not sure if that's my 360 or the game. 5 stars at this price!
Will appeal to sadistic hedonistic gamers November 27, 2008 Even more sadistic than GTA. Same freedom to roam and side missions. Ability to recruit gang members to assist you. Steal cars, mug people, take hostages, rob shops, go on a killing spree etc. Highly customisable character, gang and 'cribs'. Lots of variety in weapons, vehicles.
Outstanding game November 14, 2008 If you, like me, felt let down by the over hyped, drastically under-delivering GTA IV then I seriously recommend this to you as a similar themed but much more fun game to get your teeth into.
Right from the start I knew that I was in for a good ride, the first mission is fun and cool, without being too hard or tricky. You also get a good feel for the game during the first mission, unlike GTA IV where your just driving a car around in the dark (what fun!)
From here on in you shouldn't be getting bored or stuck for things to do. Theres alot to buy with the money you earn and a whole world of side missions and escapades to be getting stuck into. One of the coolest things about this game is the ability to buy and customize cribs; can even choose what type of bed and TV you will have in your pad!
Cut scenes are entertaining to say the least. These are actually worth watching due to the fast paced action/gunfight scenes that frequent them. They're not just some boring string of conversations between 2 Russian mobsters *no names mentioned*.
Gangs are interesting and unique looking, and fun to mow down or blow up! The graphics are neat and a big step up from the first outing, as is the car dynamics and character movement. Flashy, eye catching HUDs and on screen commands. I could go on about how sweet this game is.
If you even semi liked Saints Row...then it would be a sin not to play this.A+
