5 out of 5 stars WARNING TO ALL MUTLI CORE GRAPHICS CARD USERS   January 2, 2009
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is less of a review more of a tip for all gamers using mutli core cards or sli linked nvidia cards when trying to play this game. If you cannot get the first level to load, first all you will need to ensure vsync is enabled otherwise you wont get further than the loading screen. Secondly you will need to ensure that you only have ONE card running, yes ridiculous i know. To do this on nvidia systems enter the nvidia control panel and under 3d settings find the mutli gpu configuration tab click that then click mutli display mode. Whether this only affects nvidia sli cards like my 9800gx2 or whether it affects all mutli core cards i dont know. Doing this should allow you to play the game, but don't do this unless you have experienced problems. I have tried telling UBI this but they must all be on holiday beacuse ive had no response.

Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Get it!   December 31, 2008

This is a pretty good game. Great graphics, fluent game play, albeit a bit on the easy side, but I'm not complaining... AND it has no DRM, as games should be.
So it has become clear.
Get it! I sure did.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE PRINCE AMONGST THIEVES   December 18, 2008

There is reason for gamers to rejoice this Holiday season: apparently draconian DRM schemes are on their way out. First BETHESDA stripes SecuROM to the bare minimum for FALLOUT 3; then DRM-free WORLD OF GOO (an indie game!) outperforms SPORE - a 45million flop; and finally, UBISOFT decides to walk the narrow yet honest path towards customer loyalty, by releasing a DRM-FREE game.

This was either a very recent decision (after all, not a month ago FAR CRY 2 came with a fully activated SecuROM 7.xx and Limited Installations) or it is an experiment: their executives wait to see if games do indeed sell good either with or without intrusive DRM.

Either way, WELL DONE UBISOFT!
I was one of the first to chastise their decisions to ruin good games with heavy-handed DRM schemes. It is only fair to be one of the first to congratulate them on a customer-first decision. And because talk is cheap, I bought my copy yesterday. I would advise anyone who would care to listen to vote with his or her wallet and support such a gutsy decision. Because it sure takes guts to go against the current and brake ranks with the other greedy game publishers. And, this time, the Canadians at UBISOFT MONTREAL proved they have brass ones.

The game itself is simplified fun. The graphics are clear and fresh in a retro way and the gameplay enjoys (or suffers, depending on your point of view) a number of assists that make it easier and flowing. Probably, too easy. You will not get the frustrations of repeated deaths but neither the satisfaction of finally making it through a hard boss.
I withheld one star because of the platform feeling (combos on a PC game always give me an awkward feeling as they are much easier with a gamepad - but that again, this is an action game, it is to be expected).
All in all, a good game that deserves our support.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

1 out of 5 stars only x-box game pad supported   December 17, 2008
5 out of 14 found this review helpful

i'm astonished: i hate (really hate, i can't stand it) when a game doesn't allow to use a normal game-pad, for example my 2 thrustmaster. i don't understand it: it obliges to play with the keyboard, and it becomes absurd when u have to make delicate passages, and to digit rapid sequences. and i can't accept i have to buy an x-box controller....why? if i still have 2???
i hate this kind of policy.
anyway the game is fantastic, absolutely fantastic. it's beautiful. story from persian myth (ahriman, ormudz), abandon of blood, re-introduction of light and soft poetic enviroment....
ideed it's seems graphic is not so heavy, my 2 quandro 3500 in sli can manage it at 1920x1200.
only a pity: duels r only with one enemy, that's a little boring, and movement in battle is very linked-limited. many enemies at once were really better in past versions.
please stop to link games on pc exclusively to x-box controllers. stop it! i hope it's only a question of first version, and with a patch ubisoft can allow playing with all game-pads. in this case this game would become a 4-5 stars for me.
the question of drm: i can buy a game if i like it, i should have the possibility to try it, but then if i can't use my pad (because only an x-box one can...grr) i'm hangry. shame on ubisoft for this.

1 out of 5 stars Warning   December 17, 2008

Was recommended as this being a good entry level game for a modest PC. This is not the case. You will need to check you PC specs very carefully before buying. Despite being described as XP it's graphics requirements are well above what a normal household XP machine will have.

In response to the helpful comments below I would like to add that on my computer it was Shader Model 3 that was the problem. While this might be standard on gaming machines it is not on general purpose household XP computers. Check your graphics card specs very carefully before making a purchase.
