2 out of 5 stars Scary but not all that fun   October 31, 2008

"Dementium: The Ward" is a first-person survival horror game that mixes the eerie creepiness of Silent Hill with the fast=paced action and dark corridors of Doom. I'm not sure why this has taken so long to come out in the UK as I've had an imported copy of this for well over a year but after playing this through, it wasn't quite what I'd hoped for.

One of the best things about this game is although it is on a handheld it is extremely atmospheric. The decent graphics and scary music all adds to this and when playing you'll actually forget you're sitting in the comfort of your own home and are in the spooky and deserted mental institution. With only a flashlight (similar to Doom 3) and a limited number of weapons, you must battle your way through twisted monsters and zombies to find out what is going on.

The controls work pretty well and if you've already played games like Metroid Prime Hunters or Call of Duty 4, you should get the hang of it in no time. There's loads of mini-games throughout the game too and the designers have really made the most of the DS's control system.

So what's wrong with this game? First, it becomes dull very quickly. Next, the controls can sometimes be a little slower than your reactions, so you'll find yourself being attacked where normally you wouldn't. It's also fairly easy, so you'll fly through it all in no time. The music becomes very repetitive very quickly too so you'll find yourself setting the music to mute within an hour.

Overall it is a good idea and it is well presented but just doesn't feel that good in today's standards of survival horror games. I'd give it a go if you can get it cheap, but don't expect more than a couple of hours gameplay.

2 out of 5 stars Why do they bother?   October 1, 2008

yes really Atmospheric and creepy, like a cross between fear and resedent evil so much promise and so compelling i so wanted to play more

but this is another example of a game ruined by in this case 3 bad and so easily rectified design desisions

in third place - the map does not show blocked routes which makes it useless altough routes are generally liniear, and you cant draw on the map which would be helpfull to mark blocked routed or items you need to return to, even though you can draw on your note paper,

in second place - you seem to only have one arm which means you can only use 1 thing at a time, so what, you say, lots of games like this, fine but the whole game is set in the dark in a hospital so you need your torch on all the time and have to fratically switch between torch and gun or stick etc when something attacks you after you have done this and messed it up a thousand times on the first level the rest of the game dosent look so sweet.

and in first place and a classic bad design choice, if you die you have to go right back to the start of a level, yes you can save and quit but i repeat if you die you will go right back to the start of a level and being that generally you die right at the end of a level when things get tough you are going to get so annoyed very quickly...

no thanks
