5 out of 5 stars Hope it survives the port...   December 2, 2008

I played this on a borrowed Xbox360 and it was great fun, I will be first to the checkout when it arrives on the Wii, lets hope Frank survives the transfer to the inferior game power of the Wii and doesn't become a shuffling zombie himself. Though the possibilities of killing zombies with the Wiimote could be genius...

You play as Frank, a photojournalist literally dropped into a mall full of zombies and have 72 hours before the helicopter comes back for him. The main plot involves you rescuing survivors and uncovering why it all started, but you also have to get out alive to tell your story. In those 72 hours you can do pretty much what you want, even hide in a cupboard if you feel like it, though you would (unsurprisingly) get a pretty rubbish ending. If you manage to get through the 72 hours in a good way, you can unlock a further 12 hours of game play where you have to evade the government forces sent in on a clean-up mission, so Frank can catch his ride, tell the world in exchange for a Pulitzer...

If the 72 hours sounds a little boring, let me assure you the game play isn't!! You can take care of zombies in many ways - Kitana(sword) chainsaw (once you've earned it) pelt them with melons and pies from the food court, or even use the lawnmower if you feel like a bit of 'Red Death'. It can be a little difficult at first with low health, but as you explore your way round the mall and the story unfolds, you gain skill and strength, and you can choose to follow the plot, or ignore it and let other survivors die (but again, bad ending).

The play possibilities are endless, and on the 360 at least, cut scenes were a giggle as Frank is depicted in whatever you happen to have dressed him in at the time (what else can you do in a mall full of shops?!) Ladies dresses, hats, wrestling gear, the works! Let's hope this continues on the Wii. I remember accidentally dying and restarting my game, only to be treated to a closeup of Frank in the opening helicopter sequence dressed in sunglasses, desert boots, and a short pink dress complete with hairy legs!

Dead Rising can be fast moving and frantic, hilarious, sometimes really difficult, (it may actually be impossible to rescue all the survivors in one play through) but above all - as addictive as anything I've ever played! In two weeks I seared the health bar into the corner of my plasma and it took a month to go away, oops. Nintendo and Capcom, if you promise not to mess this port up, I promise to remember to turn down my contrast come February!
