3 out of 5 stars Conan of Cimmeria   November 25, 2006
having recieved this game as a gift I was mostly pleased being a huge fan of both the movies and comics.the story mode was ok although after awhile I did get a bit bored and eventually stopped playing. The best part for myself and my mates was the arena battles one on one or "body count"After a stressful day It was very entertaining to play bodycount which pits your chosen warrior against limitless foes(that progressively increase).being as it is a 10 minute timer, none of us to date has made it that long but have a great laugh trying.overall very enjoyable and I think I would have purchased this game myself and do hope they make a newer version with a bit better graphics such as gauntlet seven sorrows.

4 out of 5 stars Very playable. Not much yawning.   June 2, 2004

This is a fun game. The controls take a little getting used to, but once you've adjusted, it's fine. I've been playing for about 3 or 4 hours, and it's challenging, the combos work rather well, production values are high, and the enemies are varied enough to keep even a (gasp!) non-fan interested.
I have a couple of gripes, though. Why, when I change the camera angle, does it not affect where Conan's going? Actually, for those of us who fiddle with the camera, this one's irritating at times. This game bills itself as a four attack button game, but there are like 3 or 4 combos out of 50 that use the 3rd and 4th attacks. Yeah, let's use the block button for a combo! Bogus!
But overall, I'm pleased with my purchase. I've even gotten my 4 year old to play in the arena. He liked it, so I have to give it at least 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but a bit flawed in places..   April 22, 2004

First, I have to say I'm a huge fan of Robert E Howards Conan books and assuch I had high hopes for Conan the game. R.Howards world is a superbsetting for any game and has great characters and stories to drawfrom.
This game has done well for its use of the different races andplaces in Howards books. On your journey as Conan you will travel toNorthern Cimmeria, home of the Barbarians, to the Black river with itsresidents, the'Picts' chasing you all the way, you will visit a Jungle,Temples, even a coastal town and travel by sea south to the deserts ofStygia! Theres plenty of recognisable races and places put in here for thefan of the books.
The 'hack and slash' nature of the game is similar to'The Return of the king' xbox game(Lord of the Rings). You fight, earnexperience and spend it in order to buy a new special move. At first itsmerely one or two combinations but eventually you'll be stringing five orsix moves together whilst you hack your way through the mobs of spearwielding cannibals(who keep saying how delicious your big muscles willbe!! :D) to gangs of cave trolls yelling 'Kill strangers!'. It really is alot of fun to play. One problem is, sometimes, you intend to string one ortwo moves together and try to switch to block to stop an attack, only torealise youve started another move involving that button and recieve anaxe to your back!. Using the block button as a combo key was a weirddecision when they barely use the left and right trigger that could havesufficed instead,. Its a minor quibble but it can be annoying. Thepuzzles are a bit too linear and you cant really make mistakes with theorder in which you do any of them, and you wont progress further until youdo them either. The town area was wasted I felt and could have had Sooomuch more added to it in a RPG like way, a missed opertunity for sure. Inthe end I found the town the least enjoyable level rather than what Ithought was going to be the best. Its a little too easy on 'easy' or'Normal' mode but it certainly provides a decent enough challenge on'hard' mode.
After playing it I have decided despite the odd problem Ireally like it. Its just the sort of game that Conan should be in.
It also has several 'modes' including a 'quick play' which puts you a fewlevels into the game (the same used in the demo). The full game which is afair sized adventure AND 'Arena' mode where you can plug in anothercontroller and fight a friend in a pit 1 on 1 or fight a never ending armyof progressively harder AI enemies and monsters and go for the most killsyou can (no saved scores though!!? crazy). Theres even xbox live supportfor online action and although I havent tried it yet, it certainly soundsgood. The only let down here is that Conan himself isnt selectable buttheres a fine assortment of characters to choose including axe weildingPicts, sword weilding warriors, Knife weilding assassin types, Spear orhalberd weilding soldiers even,on one or two charcters, special extralarge spiked knuckle dusters knives(for want of a betterdescription!hehe).
Ok, it has some flaws, yes it has missed a fewopertunities for expanding the game with a bit better rpg element, yes itdoes have a few fustrating traits, but hey!, you wont be able to put itdown until you finish it I assure you. You'll find yourself pulling offthe most fancifull moves and revelling in defeating hordes of Conansenemies. When you complete the full adventure you will still find yourselfputting it on for a quick blast in the arena.
If you want a moretraditional 'adventure' type game with shops and different suits of armourto buy then you must look elsewhere, but if you like a good 'beatem up'with swords, axes and maces thrown in for good measure(16 types), a fewpuzzles to ponder over as you follow a decent story line, and plenty ofcombos to learn(50 combos!) this is the one for you!.
Conan fans will love it and I hope they expand on this for Conan 2!!!.Comeon Cauldron/TDK get programming and give us an even more complex versioneh? :D.This was good but i can see a five star game just waiting to bewritten here. oh and please give us a move where we can decapitate thosedamn Priests!! :)
Crom will be pleased......... :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Game - Despite Some flaws   April 15, 2004

First of all you dont have to watch the movie Conan to understand what this game is about.

I recieved this game and was really amazed at how much there is to do in the game. The game is a hack and slash/action game based on Conan the Barbarian. The game so far as I have not yet finished it, is amazing as the puzzles are quite challenging as well as boss fights. The thing that is enjoyable about this game so far is the freedom you have to explore and what you can smash in the environment. The game also include 50 hours plus of gameplay, so be expected to play for a long time.

The only flaws to this game in my opinion are that the graphics are not upto XBOX standard, the graphics used in this game look straight from the Playstation 2, and are very blocky, although that in the cut-scenes the graphics are good. Also a flaw is the difficulty of the game, the boss fights can be extremely difficult.

Other than that its an amazing game.
