Amazon.co.uk Review It's an absolute crime that there hasn't been more Wild West-themed video games over the years, but Red Dead Revolver redresses this balance almost instantly with a gloriously authentic spaghetti western feel that'll make the next clichéd fantasy or SF setting you come across even harder to bear. Red Dead Revolver has had an unusual history, starting life as an update of Capcom's old Gun Smoke arcade game before being canned. So confident were the developer's of the game's worth though that they convinced Grand Theft Auto publishers Rockstar to buy up the rights and allow them to finish their work. And thank goodness they did, for not only does the game entirely legitimise the Wild West as a viable setting for a video game, but it's one of the most entertaining arcade shooters of recent years. The controls are just complex enough to allow depth, without becoming fiddly, and allow you to use cover appropriately, and fight hand to hand and with a huge range of different weapons. The best bit though is the bullet time-esque "Dead Eye" mode which allows you to select multiple targets in slow motion and then switch back to normal time and blast everyone away instantly, just like Clint Eastwood. With sections on horseback, a number of missions (perhaps too many) where you control a side character instead of the eponymous Red, and tons of references to classic movie moments this has just about everything you could ask for from a cowboy shooter. --David Jenkins

Nice idea but so frustrating July 12, 2004 4 out of 12 found this review helpful
When I first heard of this game, a 1st person shooter in the wild west, I was really looking forward to its release. What a disappointment. All was going ok until about half way into the game when I became stuck on a level. After numerous attempts the game stopped being fun and, instead, was a chore. Although I had finished most of the level, because there were no checkpoints, I was sent back to the start to try again after each failure. It may make the game last longer but it's not my idea of a good game. Good Points: Wild west setting Bad points: frustrating later levels, no choice of difficulty, annoying quickdraw, no checkpoints in later levels. Lifespan: Approx 10 hours in 1 player plus has multiplayer options

a pleasant surprise...... June 28, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
it's the sort of thing u could picture yourself playing in the arcades. this could easily be there alongside Streetfighter, Xmen etc etc very easy to get to grips with, fascinating plot and lots of fun....cant ask for more really. quite like the duels. top class stuff. and the introduction of 'dead eye' is a nice touch. its a bit Matrix like and its somethig like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time when u slow things down to atack your enemies. basically with dead eye u can slow down the game at a crucial stage and quickly choose where u want to shoot your opponent. like i said...a nice touch. a very decent soundtrack as well. ITS A WESTERN GAME dont forget so this was a particualarly important aspect of the game. they've got this department spot on imho. all in all...a pleasant surprise. _____
