Could have been a lot better August 5, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First the good news: Tron 2.0 Killer App looks great. I wish there were more games with this much visual flair and originality. The maps and levels are complex and interesting; they're as surreal as the movie, but far more detailed and completely realized. The sheer strangeness of the physical environments is wonderful, and that is this game's best feature. It's basically a first person shooter, with some mini-games on the side, such as light-cycle combat. There are varied weapons such as grenade launcher and sniper gun, and puzzles to solve along the way, while you collect "subroutines" to upgrade your character's abilities, weapons and armour. You can get infected by viruses, and you disinfect and de-frag yourself to keep your efficiency up. Good so far.Now some bad news. Appallingly long load/save times, with added glitches - loading often got stuck with the machine whirring away busily, and nothing happening on screen. You can save your progress as you go, but it is very easy to lose your progress (forcing you to restart level) because of the way they've arranged the menu; press "a" once too often, and you've wiped your save. Very linear levels and missions, with rather stupid and easily-killed opponents. Repetitive combat and pointlessly annoying things like making you jump across chasms on stepping-stone cubes, only to find that the thing you hoped was an upgrade for your sniper gun was only a dumb e-mail about personnel management issues in the "real" world. Bad cut-scenes. Lots of back-tracking to find a switch you've missed. Falling to your death because there's no way to tell the difference between a black area of floor and empty space. And so on. It may be brilliant on-line - I don't know. But the multiplayer games aren't up to much, and even the light-cycle racing combat (a highlight of the film) was rather disappointing. Difficult without being interesting, if you know what I mean. In conclusion, brilliant visuals (like X111 - another original) but insipid gameplay. Could have been better, as I think I already said. On the other hand, I did play through to the end. On the other other hand, I'm still going to get rid of it. Still don't know what "App" means.
If you like the film December 15, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought Tron 2.0 on the pc sometime ago, and bought this on the xbox just to race light-cycles on my tv! The plot is set roughly 20 years after the movie. Alans son Jet has been digitised by Alans programme Ma3a, to help save the Encom lab pc's from a virus known as the Corruption. As Jet, you can download subroutines, permissions, emails from "archive bins". Even some of the enemies have actual filenames! As you run round all the familiar Tron sights and sounds are there. As you run along you can hear the thump of your feet on the floor, to the sound of your "disk" whizzing around. There are a bunch of weapons to choose from and combat can be tough, as well as some of the puzzles. Light-cycle raceing is great fun in massive arenas with some quite fun powerups. There are a couple of faults with this game though. Slightly lengthy load / save times, and the "memory" menu doesnt work as well as the pc version! If you missed it on the pc, or cant decide if to own it on your xbox as well, go get it! END OF LINE
