Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
It’s been a national institution for over decade now and the latest FIFA game is finally here, with lots more attacking gameplay, more customisation, more attention to detail, more online and offline multiplayer options and the deepest manager mode ever for the series.

The lowdown:
With Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series snapping at its heels with ever more voracity, suddenly it’s FIFA that’s got something to prove. The answer for this year’s edition is a new emphasis on attacking play, with a suite of new tackling, dribbling and shielding controls. Naturally, it’s got all the new stats for the 05/06 season, but with the new create-a-player option you can change the facts to fit you. Also new is a 15 year career manager mode to prove your footballing skills don’t end when you’re off the pitch.

Most exciting moment:
Winning the treble after 15 years of hard graft in the all new career mode.

Since you ask:
According to cover star Wayne Rooney, the FIFA series is popular with many other premiership players, especially when travelling together for away matches.

The bottom line:
The best FIFA game, if not the best football game, ever.
Harrison Dent

Wayne didn't realise falling asleep in a nuclear reactor would have side effects EA were keen to show they were on the ball
More Rooney, here having an existential crisis Wayne to go! I only have eyes for Roo! etc. etc.

1 out of 5 stars The worst football game I have ever played   March 5, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Someone told me that this was better than the mighty Pro Evolution Soccer. Wow! I thought, I have to give this a go.

Well they were wrong.

Poor graphics, poor gameplay, poor design, players that look nothing like their real lfe counterparts, poor AI .... I could go on forever listing the flaws this game has.

Having spent many years playing various football games I have come to the following conclusion; This is the worst football game I have ever played. A total waste of money.

In fact, my brother just brought an XBOX, so I let him have it. I'll stick to Pro Evolution Soccer in the future and avoid friends advice.

1 out of 5 stars Registered kits, could not register player faces?   September 10, 2006

This is a game that is fun to play for half an hour round a mates house, but that is as far as it goes.

The dribbling skills look nice, and the first touch is a good feature. Ok, now lets get to the meat of it:

PROBLEMS WITH THIS GAME:
1. The game play soon becomes repetative, with creative options that add up to pass up flank and cross, or through ball up middle. The computer play is awful, often he will dribble back towards his own goal from kick-off, before hitting a panicked clearence out for a throw.

2. The goalies. Firstly, they don't come off their line to intercept a pass; they would rather comically stand on their line and let the ball come to a rest a few yards infront of them, often to be gratefully collected by your striker. Still, atleast they make up for this deficiency by saving any shot, no matter how well directed, that you foolishly choose to strike from anywhere but right under their nose. Long shots are not completely fruitless though as they often result in a corner which gives you about an (unrealistic) 50/50 chance of converting.

3. The manager mode is ABYSMAL. Your formation options are limited to a few presets, and there is not even an off season to trade players in. Also, this game has the popular trend (also used in pro-evo) of trading in fictitious credits rather than a real currency. Annoying. I cannot list them all here, but about every manager mode function that the game implements is flawed and irritating. For example, i was promoted from league two with Oxford United, and the very next season my board expected nothing less than for me to win league one. still, it was not a problem as the ease of the game allowed me to cruise to the title with a winning margin of about 30 points. Thats about when i stopped playing the game.

4. Okay, FIFA has all the registered kits. This is one advantage over the far superior PES. However, atleast PES made the effort to give the players even a slight resemblance to their real life counterparts. Ok, i admit that rooney, ronaldiniho, infact about the top 10 players in the world look the part. But below that you might aswell be playing with a bunch of randomly generated computer models (oh yeh, you are). This goes for stats aswell, even big players like Kevin Nolan have ridiculously innacurate stats. For someone who scored 9 goals last season ( a more than respectable tally for a midfielder ) it amused me to see his shooting accuracy in the low 30s (out of 100). Things get worse when you drop below the premier division, i bought Leeds player Frazer Richardson, but was shocked to see his dark black hair had been replaced with bright blonde. I suppose i shouldnt complain, i am lucky he wasnt the generic 'Shaven Headed Lower League Player'. The fact that this game features the lower leagues is the reason (other than that i have to) for me awarding this game a star at all.

5. It says alot about this game that the most entertaining feature is watching the Memorable Moments highlight reel which features some top knoch goals, all unreplicatable in the game.

Okay, thats it. Hopefully i have put you off, but if you are like me then by this stage you will probably have already made up your mind. I only wish i had saved my time and money by listening to my mate who tried to turn me away from this game. Go for Pro Evo.

What a trumendous acheivement. How can one possibly vote this game any less than 5 STARS, in a nutshell it is an epic football game with everything you want. I used to play pro evo 4 on PS2 and when i got to 6 star diffculty level i was addicted that it cost me three PS2 controllers (60), the actual game (30 approx) and consequently my PS2 () as i threw my anger at the console and its equipment when i got frustrated with the game. Pro evo is not the game you want basically and yes to those opposing you may call me a d**k h**d but face the facts sunshine.....face the facts. Fifa is the better football game and when i bought 06 for XBOX i loved it and got addicted up until the point the console couldn't read the disk anymore. It makes you addicted and you'll want more and more,....a bit like boozing i supppose. So i won't bore you anymore just get the game even if your undecided cos' its worth it!! GRAPHICS (4 STARS) LIFESPAN (5 STARS) VALUE FOR MONEY (6 STARS)

This game is no match for pro evo 5, the gamepay is poor, the graphics are not great either. The good thing about this game is the presentation of the game, the menu which includes classic moments (goals), retro fifa games and interviews with samuel eto'o etc.

Probably worth the buy

Fifa 06 is the ultimate football game.
It not only better than pro evolution soccer
it better than all the previous fifa games.
The player likenesses are superb plus the gameplay is excellent.
The best features include player creation and edit plus the ability to save replays of great goals or saves.
The substitutions are better you can watch the players coming on and off.
Manager mode is much more detailed.
You can buy/sell players or loan players from other teams without paying a huge transfer fee.
corners and free kicks are improved also, its not as difficult to score from them.
Throw ins are excuted better.
The graphic quality is superb on xbox you can see every detail of the players and the stadiums.
overall a top quality game.
Fifa 06 included the features i wanted in fifa 05
such as saving replays and seeing players come on/off during subs plus seeing formations and lineups at beginning of a match.
One again you may take players from one team to another with the "my fifa 06" function to keep up with real life transfers.
This is the perfect football game im keeping mine and not buying any other.
